Google Adds Sleep Detection and Smart ANC Controls to Pixel Buds
A major update brings Pixel Watch integration, dynamic noise cancellation, and new voice commands to the Pixel Buds lineup.
The Verge
Google is rolling out a significant update for its Pixel Buds 2A and Pro 2 earbuds, introducing features that were initially previewed in August. The update brings sleep-aware capabilities and enhanced control options to both models.
Sleep Awareness via Pixel Watch#
The headline addition is a sleep detection feature that only works when paired with a Pixel Watch. Once the watch recognizes that you've fallen asleep, your earbuds automatically respond by halting playback, muting all notifications, and disabling touch controls—letting you rest undisturbed.
Microphone and Translation Controls#
Both earbuds now support a tap-to-mute gesture for calls, enabling quick microphone toggling when using a compatible Pixel phone. Live translation has also been streamlined with a single-tap activation, simplifying real-time language conversion during conversations.
Voice Commands and ANC Adjustments#
Gemini voice commands expand control options, allowing users to manage active noise cancellation levels, tweak equalizer settings, and toggle touch controls without reaching for their phone. The Pro 2 gains an additional advantage through Dynamic ANC, which automatically recalibrates audio and noise cancellation intensity based on how well the earbuds fit in your ears.
Availability and Recent Changes#
Google published details of the rollout on the Pixel Buds community forum. An earlier version of the announcement suggested that the original Pixel Buds Pro would receive most features (excluding Dynamic ANC), but that model has since been removed from the official post. The company has not yet clarified the change.
