Ukrainian drone operators outmatch US armor in NATO war games
Combat-hardened drone teams from Ukraine are teaching NATO forces hard lessons about modern warfare in live military exercises.

Ukrainian drone operators decisively defeated a US Army tank brigade during a major NATO exercise held in Germany this spring, demonstrating how the realities of unmanned aerial warfare have shifted the tactical landscape on modern battlefields.
The Exercise#
The semiannual training scenario, known as Combined Resolve, ran from April through May and pitted US forces against Ukrainian drone teams operating under realistic combat conditions. According to reporting from The Wall Street Journal, the Ukrainian operators swiftly identified and destroyed American armored platforms—including M1A2 tanks and Bradley infantry fighting vehicles from the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team of the 1st Cavalry Division, which arrived for rotational duty from Fort Hood, Texas.
The drone teams proved so effective that US vehicles were being disabled faster than planners could deploy them, necessitating rapid "respawns" to sustain the exercise. One participating soldier captured the challenge in promotional video footage, noting that "there is never a safe spot or safe moment in the game anymore."
Lessons Learned#
Rather than a defeat, the exercise functioned as a learning opportunity. By cycling through repeated scenarios, American troops developed countermeasures against the drone threat—improving their ability to disperse formations, conceal positions, and deploy electronic warfare systems. The iterative training proved valuable in helping traditional armored units adapt to a fundamentally different threat environment.
Broader Pattern#
Ukraine's drone expertise is reshaping NATO training across multiple exercises. In May, Ukrainian operators participated in Aurora 26, a Swedish-led NATO drill, where their unmanned systems similarly devastated attacking mechanized forces. According to The Kyiv Independent, the volume of simulated losses forced exercise planners to reset the scenario entirely, underscoring how thoroughly the Ukrainian teams disrupted traditional combined arms tactics.
