Robots and drones enable Ukraine to reclaim territory and repel Russian encirclement in eastern campaign
The Ukrainian military's Operation Vivaldi has regained control of significant territory by deploying robotic systems and achieving air superiority through coordinated drone strikes and electronic warfare.

Ukraine's military operation launched this spring has leveraged robotic systems and drone capabilities to push back Russian forces across eastern territories, recapturing roughly 96 square miles and neutralizing a Russian strategy to encircle key Ukrainian strongholds in the Donetsk region.
Operation Vivaldi's strategic advances#
The Ukrainian Third Army Corps has executed a disciplined operational security approach since May 2026, keeping advances largely concealed while simultaneously hampering Russian command awareness. The Russian military's own difficulties were compounded by what analysts describe as widespread internal misreporting about battlefield conditions when outcomes favor Ukraine.
Ukraine's success stems from multiple coordinated tactics: a sustained campaign targeting Russian fuel supplies with intermediate-range drone strikes has created critical diesel shortages affecting Russian electronic warfare infrastructure, while Ukrainian counter-measures have neutralized approximately 20,000 Russian drones. This combination has given Ukrainian forces what military analysts term tactical drone overmatch—a decisive advantage in aerial reconnaissance and strike capability.
The toll on Russian elite units#
The elite Russian drone unit Rubicon experienced significant losses during the Vivaldi campaign and has since been pulled from the affected region. Ukrainian advances toward Lyman in Donetsk Oblast have demonstrated the vulnerability of Russian drone operations when facing Ukrainian air superiority.
Despite these setbacks, Russian commanders continue concentrating armor and drone assets near Dobropillya, signaling preparation for mechanized offensives as fall approaches. According to the Institute for the Study of War, Russia has tested new anti-drone protection systems on its most advanced tanks, though Ukrainian drones have repeatedly penetrated these defenses.
Russia's adaptive response#
Moscow has not remained passive. Russian forces have incorporated many of Ukraine's proven drone innovations while developing parallel capabilities, continuing missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities. Beyond the frontline, Russia has accelerated what officials call hybrid warfare targeting Europe, including recent incidents involving an explosive drone vessel near critical offshore energy infrastructure and an attempted .
