OpenAI's AGI Deployment Leader Fidji Simo Departs for Health Recovery
Simo transitions to part-time advisory role after monthslong medical leave for a worsening chronic condition.

Fidji Simo, who leads OpenAI's AGI deployment efforts as the company's chief executive in that division, is stepping away from her full-time position to become a part-time adviser. The transition follows an extended medical hiatus prompted by complications with a chronic neuroimmune illness.
In a message shared Thursday, Simo explained her decision: "Three months ago, I had to go on medical leave after a severe exacerbation of a chronic illness I've lived with for seven years. During that time, it became clear that the road to recovery would be much longer and more complex than I had anticipated—and that I needed to focus on it fully."
Health Challenges Behind the Move#
Simo has dealt with postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) since 2019. When she announced her temporary leave in April, she described postponing medical interventions to maintain her commitment to work, noting she had "pushed a little too far" and needed new treatment approaches. Her recent exacerbation forced a reassessment of that strategy.
Broader Organizational Shifts at OpenAI#
Simo's departure is part of a wider leadership reshuffle at the company. Greg Brockman, OpenAI's president and cofounder, assumed product strategy responsibilities earlier this year, while Thibault Sottiaux was elevated to oversee core products including ChatGPT. Former COO Brad Lightcap moved to a special projects role.
OpenAI has been consolidating its focus toward a handful of flagship offerings—merging teams behind ChatGPT, its browser, and AI coding tools into a unified "superapp." The company has also wound down experimental ventures like Sora video generation.
Strategic Positioning Ahead of IPO#
The organizational restructuring reflects OpenAI's push toward a planned 2027 initial public offering, with a reported valuation target of $1 trillion. By concentrating resources on proven products, the company aims to demonstrate revenue potential to investors.
On the same day as Simo's announcement, OpenAI rolled out its largest ChatGPT update since launch, introducing an AI agent capable of performing tasks on users' behalf—moving files, writing code, and managing files—alongside a redesigned desktop interface.
