Google launches Playground: an AI-powered browser tool for game creation
Google's new platform lets anyone write games in a browser using AI prompts, with no coding required.
The Verge
Google has unveiled Playground, a browser-based game creation platform powered by AI that aims to remove barriers to game development. Available today in the US for ages 18+, the tool lets users build and refine playable games through conversational prompts rather than traditional coding.
How it works#
The interface operates around natural language commands—you describe what you want to build and Playground responds with a playable prototype. Starting from a blank slate, remixing templates, or following guided tutorials, you maintain full creative control. Need to adjust physics, rewrite gameplay rules, redesign characters, or transform the visual environment? Simply describe the change and the AI handles it. Once satisfied, you can immediately test your creation.
Behind the scenes, Playground taps Google's suite of foundation models, including Gemini, Nano Banana, and Lyria, combined with custom tools developed through in-house game prototyping and testing.
Sharing and discovery#
Finished games can be shared via direct link or submitted to the Playground Explore gallery for broader discovery. Select genres will include leaderboards and multiplayer support. Google will curate the gallery to surface original, entertaining titles based on player ratings and engagement.
Pricing and access#
The platform is free, though users with a Google One subscription gain higher weekly token limits depending on their plan tier.
Competing tools#
Google's announcement parallels similar initiatives across the industry. Meta recently launched AI game-building tools for its Horizon platform available on phones and web, with published games eligible for promotion across Facebook and Instagram. Roblox has also begun rolling out AI-assisted game creation on mobile as part of an alpha "Build" feature.
Separately, Google and game engine company Unity announced Unity Spark, a more sophisticated AI-powered creation tool designed for collaborative development. Games built with Spark can be published to Playground. A closed beta for Spark begins later this year, with sign-ups starting now.
