Budget handheld fans outperform pricey rivals in real-world summer tests
A $25 JisuLife fan proved more practical than premium brands costing four times as much, delivering longer battery life and quieter operation.

Premium handheld cooling devices dominate the market, but budget alternatives deliver superior performance for everyday use. After a summer of testing, a reviewer found that an affordable personal fan from Chinese manufacturer JisuLife dramatically outperformed costlier competitors in ways that actually matter.
The case for going cheap#
The JisuLife Life10 S, available for around $25, proved adequate for surviving humid outdoor activities—from baseball games to concerts and hiking trips—without the premium price tag of rival products. The device features a straightforward design with a sliding power switch on the back that prevents accidental activation, a single front button to cycle through five speed settings, and a basic LCD display showing battery level and current speed. While spartan compared to feature-rich alternatives, this stripped-down approach prioritizes simplicity and reliability.
Where premium fans fall short#
Dyson's HushJet Mini Cool ($99) and SharkNinja's ChillPill ($150) both offer advanced engineering and design, yet each has practical drawbacks. The Dyson fan produces an irritating high-pitched whine even at its lowest setting—problematic for a device meant to sit near your face and ears for extended periods. The Shark model pairs cooling plate technology with its fan function but offers only brief cooling windows tied to battery capacity.
In direct comparison, the JisuLife fan operates at a lower frequency that remains tolerable for hours, and its sound signature is far less fatiguing than Dyson's whine.
Battery life changes everything#
The gap in endurance proved decisive. The JisuLife's 5,000mAh battery ran for just over 16 hours at half power—sufficient cooling for even the hottest days. By contrast, Dyson estimates its HushJet delivers up to six hours at minimum speed and just over an hour at full power. The Shark ChillPill reaches approximately 11 hours at its lowest setting, declining sharply to 90 minutes at maximum output.
For summer activities where access to charging stations is limited, the JisuLife's extended runtime makes a tangible difference in user experience.
The wearable alternative and beyond#
Neck-mounted cooling fans, popular at some retailers, distributed airflow too broadly to feel effective. The constant drone from positioning the motor directly below the ear throughout use made them less appealing than handheld options, according to testing with multiple family members.
