OpenAI's new Micro keypad offers quick shortcuts for ChatGPT power users, but leaves casual users cold
OpenAI's first hardware device pairs customizable macro keys with AI assistants, though its $230 price and learning curve have drawn skepticism from the developer community.

OpenAI has entered the hardware arena with Micro, a specialized keypad co-designed with keyboard maker Work Louder that promises to streamline interactions with ChatGPT and its coding tools. The device arrived amid legal turbulence—Apple sued OpenAI over alleged trade secret theft weeks earlier—and hints of broader hardware ambitions including a screenless smart speaker reportedly built by former Apple engineers.
What Micro does#
The keypad features six customizable "agent" buttons at the top for launching specific ChatGPT tasks, paired with six command keys below for controlling those agents. A dedicated voice dictation button lets users speak their requests directly; pressing the adjacent send button then submits the command. Connection happens via Bluetooth or USB, and all customization takes place within ChatGPT itself, where users can adjust key brightness, assign projects, and map out their workflow.
Users can swap between different ChatGPT sessions and projects by toggling keys, and the buttons display status through a color system: white for idle agents, blue while thinking, green for completion, and red for errors.
The skepticism problem#
The device has encountered a chilly reception from its intended audience. Reddit reviews dismissed it as a prank, while independent tech outlet Aftermath published a scathing take titled "OpenAI's expensive macropad feels engineered to piss me off specifically"—criticizing the $230 price point against cheaper alternatives and DIY macro pads already available to developers.
The core critique boils down to friction: developers must invest time learning the button layout and customization system just to replicate what their existing mouse and keyboard already do faster.
In practice#
After customization, the keypad delivered genuine efficiency gains for frequent ChatGPT users. The combination of preset agent keys and voice dictation created a notably smoother workflow compared to typing requests manually. However, that benefit hinges entirely on daily, intensive ChatGPT usage—a threshold many developers and casual users simply don't meet.
The device itself feels premium; it's sturdy enough to serve as a paperweight and arrives in an Apple-esque white box that some observers have noted. But that tactile quality doesn't automatically justify the learning curve or cost for anyone not already living in ChatGPT.
