Claude Cowork Breaks Free From Desktop, Now Runs Tasks Across Phones and Web
Anthropic's agentic work assistant is moving beyond its coding roots to become a ubiquitous office coworker that can run jobs in the background across devices.

Anthropic is rolling out its general-purpose work agent Claude Cowork to the web and mobile platforms this week, expanding beyond the desktop application that debuted in January. Max subscribers can now launch a task on one device, monitor its progress on another, and retrieve completed work without needing to stay tethered to their desk.
The expansion reflects a strategic shift within the AI industry: moving beyond conversational chatbots to become embedded infrastructure for how knowledge workers actually spend their time.
From Coding Tool to Invisible Coworker#
Claude Cowork was initially positioned as a no-code alternative to specialized coding tools. The multi-device rollout signals that Anthropic wants to reposition it as something more fundamental—a background agent that seamlessly follows users across their workflow, popping up only when human judgment is required.
The ability to continue running tasks in the background without an active connection makes this possible. One illustration from Anthropic shows the ideal use case: "Set Monday's client prep for 6 am: Claude works through the email threads, transcripts, and recent news, builds the briefing doc, and leaves the follow-up email drafted but unsent. Review it over coffee."
A Broader Shift in How AI Gets Deployed#
This move mirrors what OpenAI is doing with Codex, which began as a code-generation tool but has increasingly become a multi-purpose work aid for reports, spreadsheets, presentations, and data analysis. The underlying bet from both companies: competitive advantage will flow not from the best conversational model, but from owning the platforms where work actually gets executed.
Anthropic is also pursuing this strategy elsewhere. The company recently introduced Claude Tag, an always-active Claude assistant embedded directly in Slack to function as an AI teammate.
What Work Is Actually Getting Done#
New data from Anthropic analyzing 1.2 million anonymized Cowork sessions from over 600,000 organizations offers insight into how the tool is being used in practice:
