OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Work to Automate Extended Tasks Without Stopping
A new tool lets ChatGPT run unattended for hours on complex workflows and scheduled tasks, addressing earlier limitations with its web-browsing agent mode.
Ars Technica
OpenAI has rolled out ChatGPT Work, a capability designed to overcome a persistent weakness in its automated agents: the tendency to halt after brief periods. The new offering allows the system to remain engaged on a single project for extended stretches—hours, if necessary—and carry tasks through to completion without constant human input.
Designed for Complex, Multi-Step Workflows#
The company is encouraging users to test ChatGPT Work on projects they understand well, such as budgeting exercises or preparing presentations for sales teams. The system can theoretically orchestrate entire campaigns, starting from market research and advancing through messaging drafts to location-specific promotional materials. Importantly, OpenAI built in safeguards: the tool will pause before taking significant actions and request approval, keeping humans in the decision-making loop.
Scheduled Tasks and Integration#
A companion feature called Scheduled Tasks allows ChatGPT Work to handle repetitive work on a calendar or event-driven basis—essentially a more intelligent version of traditional automation tools. These operations run independently, meaning the system can continue working while you're away. You can monitor progress from a smartphone or other device.
The platform connects to widely-used workplace tools including Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, and SharePoint through custom integrations. On the desktop, users can grant access to local files and use an embedded browser to interact with web-based resources. A refreshed Chrome extension will enable web tasks without leaving the browser itself.
End of the Atlas Browser#
This launch marks the functional sunset of OpenAI's Atlas web browser, which debuted less than nine months earlier. The dedicated browser had been positioned as a tool for autonomous browsing but is being retired in favor of integrating those capabilities directly into ChatGPT Work.
