Elon Musk launches Grok 4.5 as a faster, cheaper rival to Claude Opus
xAI's new model claims performance parity with Anthropic's flagship while addressing user decline in the competitive AI market.
The New Stack
Elon Musk's xAI announced the public rollout of Grok 4.5, positioning the model as a leaner alternative to Anthropic's widely-used Claude Opus. The release comes after a brief internal trial period across SpaceX and Tesla operations, with Musk describing the new system as "Opus-class, but faster, more token-efficient and lower cost."
A billion-parameter upgrade#
Grok 4.5 draws on xAI's latest 1.5-trillion-parameter V9 foundation model, representing a substantial computational leap from previous versions. The company also plans to deploy an even larger 2-trillion-parameter variant in August, signaling aggressive expansion across its model lineup.
The rollout gains additional firepower through supplemental training data sourced from Cursor, the AI coding platform that xAI is acquiring in a $60 billion transaction. Access to Cursor's development workflows and coder interactions could give Grok 4.5 meaningful advantages in software engineering and related technical tasks.
Timing targets Anthropic's stumbles#
The launch arrives as Anthropic navigates regulatory headwinds with Claude Fable 5, its recently redeployed flagship that fell under federal export restrictions over safety concerns. With Fable 5 now reverting to the older Opus 4.8 when safety protocols engage, Musk appears to see an opening for a capable, less-encumbered alternative to gain traction.
Reversing user exodus#
Grok faces urgent momentum challenges. Recent data from Apptopia indicates that the Grok app's daily active user base in the United States contracted 28% since April, with the service's market share dropping below 9%. The new model launch aims to stanch that decline by offering measurable improvements in speed and cost that appeal to budget-conscious and efficiency-focused adopters.
The competitive landscape is heating further, with rumors circulating about OpenAI's forthcoming GPT-5.6 lineup—ensuring that the race for AI dominance remains intense across multiple fronts.
