Spotify Launches Conversational AI Music Assistant for Premium Members
Premium listeners can now chat with Spotify's AI to discover music, explore their listening habits, and refine playlists through natural dialogue.
TechCrunch — AI
Spotify is deepening its investment in AI-powered listening experiences with a new conversational assistant that lets Premium subscribers chat directly with the platform to find music and discover audio content. The feature—accessible via voice or text across the app's Home and Now Playing screens on mobile—mirrors the conversational interface of tools like ChatGPT, but tailored to music discovery and exploration.
How It Works#
The assistant is available to users 18 and older in the U.S., Ireland, and Sweden (in English) on both iOS and Android devices. Spotify draws on both proprietary AI models and external providers to power the experience. Users can engage in back-and-forth dialogue to refine what they're listening to—asking the app to "play artists I haven't heard before," then narrowing down with follow-ups like adding a specific artist by name or shifting to "more upbeat" tracks. Beyond playback control, the tool can answer questions about individual songs (like what inspired them, release dates, or related artists) and help users dive deeper into their own listening history.
More Than Just Playback#
The conversational layer extends Spotify's existing AI toolkit, which already includes an AI DJ with voice interaction and playlist-building features powered by text prompts. This new assistant integrates those capabilities into a more flexible dialogue system. Users can save discovered tracks, queue them up, or follow artists directly from the conversation—turning exploration into action without leaving the chat interface.
Beta and Future Development#
Spotify notes this is a beta release, meaning performance may be inconsistent as the company gathers user feedback for refinement. The rollout is beginning immediately on mobile in the three launching markets.
