Wispr raises $280M as AI dictation startup expands into meetings and beyond
The voice-to-text platform is moving past its core dictation tool with new models and a meeting notes feature, as competition heats up in the space.
TechCrunch — AI
Wispr, an AI-powered voice dictation platform, has secured $280 million in Series B funding at a $2 billion valuation, led by Menlo Ventures. The round brings the startup's total fundraising to $361 million since its inception, marking aggressive expansion just under a year after its previous funding cycle.
Expansion beyond voice-to-text#
The capital injection supports Wispr's move into adjacent areas beyond dictation. The company recently launched a meeting note-taking tool, positioning itself to compete with established players like Granola, Fireflies, and Otter. The meeting product can surface summaries and action items, though deeper integrations with productivity apps—such as the ability to draft emails or create documents automatically—remain on the roadmap.
Alongside its core dictation service, Wispr is also establishing Wispr Interface Labs, a division led by Ariya Rastrow (an early Amazon Alexa contributor) to pioneer new human-computer interaction patterns.
New model targets quality concerns#
Recent weeks saw user complaints about declining transcription accuracy on Wispr Flow. In response, the startup unveiled a new speech recognition model, Canto, designed to slash error rates from around 30% down to below 10%. This technical lift comes as the company scales operations—it launched an Android app earlier this year and expanded its go-to-market presence in India and the U.K.
Wispr has also begun hardware partnerships, collaborating with devices like the Oasis ring to enable quiet dictation without requiring users to speak at normal volume.
Intensifying competition#
The funding round occurs amid rising competition in the AI dictation space. Tools including Willow, Monologue, Aqua, and Superwhisper are all chasing the same users, while open-source and budget-friendly alternatives are beginning to erode the premium segment.
Existing backers—Notable Capital, NEA, Neo Ventures, 8VC, and MVP Ventures—participated in the round, joined by new investors Acrew, Forerunner, Goodwater, Peak XV, Together Fund, and PLUS Capital.
