Character.AI launches AI-made microdramas where viewers can chat with and reshape the story
The AI chatbot platform is producing its own short-form dramas and letting users over 18 interact with characters and branch storylines in real time.

Character.AI has jumped into the booming microdrama space with a novel hook: interactive shows where viewers can chat with characters, ask questions, and roleplay alternate plot paths in real time. The move builds on the platform's core strength—customizable AI avatars—and represents the latest pivot toward entertainment-first features.
Three inaugural series and an interactive twist#
The company is rolling out three original microdramas created with AI production tools. The slate includes a romance titled Last Summer, a horror entry called The Nighttime Game, and a survival spectacle named Eden Fall (modeled after Hunger Games-style competition). Users aged 18 and older gain access to chat with characters from these shows, question them, and propose different storyline directions, turning passive viewing into something closer to collaborative storytelling.
A studio-first approach with creator ambitions ahead#
For now, Character.AI's production team is driving the format and refining workflows in-house. But the company's longer-term vision is to hand the tools to users. "Over time, the goal is to turn those learnings and workflows into creator tools, enabling users to make their own series from original Characters and share them with a global audience," a spokesperson explained.
Broader shift toward scripted entertainment#
This launch caps a string of entertainment-focused expansions. Earlier this year, the platform introduced Lorebook, a tool for building fictional worlds that characters can reference, and Books, which lets users insert themselves into classic literature or roleplay existing characters. Currently in testing are c.ai FM (an audio series creator, now available to select participants in the c.ai Labs experimental program) and c.ai Reads (a fiction-writing feature). Professional writers are already using the audio tool to develop serialized dramas.
Why it matters#
Microdramas have become a lightning rod for attention and revenue across the industry—from dedicated apps and social platforms like TikTok and Instagram to legacy streamers like Peacock and Amazon Prime. The interactive layer Character.AI is adding could differentiate it in a crowded field and deepen user engagement, with audiences already spending over 950 minutes monthly on the platform.
