Waze adds Gemini AI voice commands and quieter navigation mode
Google's Waze navigation app is rolling out AI-powered features including smarter voice reporting, destination search, and an option to reduce spoken directions.

Google is bringing AI capabilities to Waze, its popular navigation app, through integration with Gemini and a suite of new features aimed at making trips more personalized and less intrusive.
Smarter Voice Reporting and Search#
The update refines Waze's existing conversational reporting tool, enabling drivers to speak naturally when flagging traffic hazards and map corrections. Rather than wrestling with menu selections, users can now describe problems like "Road closed on Main Street" or "That house number is wrong," and Gemini will interpret the intent. The app is also introducing Destination Search, which translates spoken queries—"Find me an open coffee shop" or "Show me cheap gas nearby"—into navigation targets in real time. These AI-powered voice features leverage recent advances in conversational AI that make natural language handling far more reliable than before.
Quieter Driving and Smarter Routing#
Beyond AI additions, Waze is addressing a common frustration: constant voice guidance can drown out music or podcasts. A new "less chatty" voice mode lets drivers keep directions audible without the extra chatter. The app is also introducing Motorcycle Mode, which refines routing for two-wheeled vehicles with dedicated shortcuts and more accurate arrival predictions tailored to the riding experience.
In addition, Waze will now learn from individual driving habits, suggesting routes aligned with each user's preference—favoring highways over surface streets, for instance, or vice versa. The app combines this personal history with its own traffic intelligence to show the most relevant options first.
Waze vs. Google Maps#
While Waze gains incremental AI enhancements, Google's flagship Maps app has been receiving more substantial AI integration, suggesting the company is prioritizing AI capabilities in its core navigation product.
