Consumer Group Challenges Trump Ads Funded by US Government as Illegal Propaganda
Public Citizen filed complaints arguing that campaign-style commercials paid for with federal funds violate anti-propaganda and political activity laws.
Ars Technica
Consumer advocacy group Public Citizen has asked federal regulators to halt the broadcast of Trump commercials financed by US government funds, contending they breach federal laws governing the use of taxpayer money for propaganda and restrictions on political engagement by government employees.
The Disputed Ads#
One advertisement in question, titled "The Final Battle," closely mirrors a campaign spot Trump aired during the 2024 election. The commercial features stark black-and-white video of Trump walking down a corridor with determined expression while audio proclaims: "This is the final battle. With you at my side, we will demolish the deep state. We will expel the warmongers from our government." The spot continues with Trump vowing to "cast out the communists, Marxists, and fascists" and "rout the fake news media."
The critical distinction between this version and the 2024 original is the funding source: the new ads are labeled "Paid for by the US government," whereas Trump's campaign committee covered the earlier iteration. According to reports, the Department of Homeland Security allocated funds for these advertisements, which appeared on NBC's Saturday Night Live, Fox News Sunday, and college and NFL football broadcasts over the past weekend.
Additional commercials funded this way include spots where Trump asserts "America will never be a communist country" and claims that "the United States of America is the most successful, most accomplished, most exceptional nation ever to exist in human history."
The Legal Challenge#
Public Citizen filed formal complaints with both the Federal Communications Commission and Federal Trade Commission, arguing these taxpayer-financed ads breach laws specifically designed to prevent government propaganda and limit political activities by federal employees. The White House has characterized the advertisements as public service announcements rather than campaign materials.
According to reporting from the Wall Street Journal, Trump personally advocated for and participated in developing the commercials.
