Rivian's R2 gamble is working: deliveries surge 45% as EV market struggles
Strong third-quarter numbers suggest the company's shift toward a lower-priced model is resonating with buyers.
The Verge
Rivian's bet on an affordable vehicle appears to be gaining traction. The company announced third-quarter figures showing it produced nearly 20,000 vehicles and delivered roughly 19,250—an 85 percent jump in production and a 45 percent rise in deliveries year-over-year.
Market success amid industry headwinds#
Rivian's growth stands out starkly against a broader EV downturn. After the federal $7,500 electric vehicle tax credit was eliminated last year, the market cooled significantly. Industry data shows overall EV sales down nearly 24 percent year-over-year as of September 2026, while Tesla posted a modest 2.1 percent quarterly sales decline. Rivian's expansion during this period makes the results particularly noteworthy.
The R2 factor#
The company maintains that its traditional R1 lineup—which includes the R1T truck and R1S SUV—and its commercial delivery van will see flat year-over-year deliveries. If those segments held steady from last year's figures, that implies approximately 6,000 R2 vehicles reached customers this quarter, demonstrating early traction for the mass-market focused model.
Rivian has signaled it expects to deliver more than 25,000 R2 units in the model's first year, a pace that would rank among the fastest EV launches in U.S. history. CEO RJ Scaringe has emphasized the model's existential importance to the company, stating that the R2 is crucial for transitioning from a niche manufacturer to one operating at meaningful scale. The company confirmed its full-year 2026 target of 65,000 to 70,000 vehicle deliveries.
Building momentum#
The positive sales figures arrive alongside other encouraging developments. Rivian recently announced that the R2 achieved a 50 percent reduction in lifetime carbon emissions four years ahead of its target, demonstrating progress on sustainability metrics as well.
