Anthropic Pushes Back Deadline for Free Claude Access to Fable 5
Subscribers get five additional days to use the flagship model before transitioning to pay-per-token pricing.
The New Stack
Anthropic has delayed its planned shift away from included access to its flagship Fable model for Claude subscribers, moving the transition date from July 7 to July 12. The shift gives users an extra five days to consume their remaining Fable tokens before the company moves to a pay-per-use billing structure.
Paid Claude customers will continue to have Fable available as part of their subscription plan through the new date, capped at 50% of weekly usage limits. After July 12, the model will no longer be included in subscription packages.
A Troubled Launch Timeline#
Fable's path to availability has been anything but smooth. The model was originally scheduled to roll out to paid Claude users from June 9 through June 22, but access lasted only about three days before U.S. government intervention forced Anthropic to pause availability. The model finally returned on July 1, giving subscribers only a brief window before the planned transition to paid-per-token access.
Scaling Challenges and Next Steps#
Anthropic had previously indicated that reintroducing Fable to subscription plans depended on bringing sufficient computing capacity online. The extension to July 12 suggests the company may be managing demand or finalizing its infrastructure preparations for the shift to usage-based billing. While the new deadline appears set to hold, the possibility remains that further adjustments could occur if capacity or other constraints emerge.
