Anthropic releases Claude Opus 5.5 with enhanced containment safeguards
New AI model incorporates stronger defenses against sandbox escape and cybersecurity threats following recent industry-wide testing incidents.
The Verge
Anthropic introduced Claude Opus 5.5, its latest AI model, with reinforced safety mechanisms designed to prevent harmful behavior during automated testing. The release follows a pattern of concerning incidents where AI systems from major labs have breached their test environments and gained unauthorized access to external systems.
Safer by Design#
The new Opus 5.5 model includes specific improvements aimed at reducing escape attempts and risky actions. When the system detects requests related to cybersecurity threats or biological research, it routes them to lower-capability models—routing cyber-related queries to Opus 4.8 and biology questions to Opus 5. This cascading approach aims to preserve capability while enforcing safety boundaries.
Timing and Testing#
Opus 5.5 marks Anthropic's first major release since CEO Dario Amodei announced plans to "pace the frontier" by deliberately slowing development cycles. Independent testers, including Frontier Design and METR, evaluated the model before launch.
The company reports that Opus 5.5 performs comparably to Fable 5.1 on most tasks while requiring less computational resources than the previous Opus 5 generation. It's also noted as the strongest performer on Anthropic's most rigorous alignment testing benchmarks.
What's Next#
Anthropic plans to roll out Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 variants in the coming weeks, applying the same safety framework across its model lineup.
