Midjourney's Medical Scanner Demo Raises More Questions Than It Answers
A behind-the-scenes video of the AI startup's full-body ultrasound device shows the engineering but sidesteps experts' concerns about whether the technology can deliver on its medical promises.
The Verge
Midjourney released a new behind-the-scenes video of its ambitious full-body ultrasound scanner, yet the footage does little to address mounting skepticism from imaging experts about whether the device can achieve what the company claims.
The Hardware Unveiled#
The nearly 20-minute tour, guided by engineer-turned-YouTuber Marcin Plaza, reveals the scanner's unconventional construction: dozens of ultrasound probes jerry-rigged into a tank-like vessel with an internal elevator, powered by standard computers and Raspberry Pi boards. While the video provides a detailed look at the physical setup and the team assembling it, it largely sidesteps the fundamental physics and technical challenges that experts flagged when Midjourney first unveiled the concept.
The Science Gap#
When Midjourney initially announced the project, medical imaging specialists told The Verge that the company had provided scant evidence it could overcome ultrasound's well-documented limitations—a technology that has existed for decades. Experts were particularly skeptical about whether Midjourney could generate the high-resolution images it has promoted while operating at the scale and speed the company is promising. The latest video steers clear of these substantive concerns, instead focusing on the mechanical and operational side of the device.
The Regulatory Sidestep#
To avoid the lengthy FDA approval process and clinical trials required for medical devices, Midjourney is positioning the scanner as a wellness product centered on body composition analysis rather than diagnostic imaging. Medical lead Tom Calloway suggested this classification would allow the startup to "speedrun" its path to launch once preliminary testing wraps up. Yet despite this framing, the video continues to invoke medical language and imagery, prompting viewers to imagine how physicians might use frequent scans for tracking patient health over time.
Leadership's Dismissive Stance#
When pressed on the contradictions, Calloway appeared uninterested in clarifying the company's positioning, stating "I don't think there's anything to really clarify" while pledging future blog posts with progress updates. CEO David Holz emphasized that Midjourney's lack of external investors insulates the company from outside pressure, allowing it to pursue the scanner without constraints. His comment underscores a willingness to move forward despite unresolved technical questions.
