Anthropic wins clearance to restore Claude Fable 5 after Trump talks
Following negotiations with the Trump administration, Anthropic can now bring its sidelined consumer AI model back online with select restrictions.

Anthropic has secured government approval to bring Claude Fable 5 back into service after an extended shutdown. The company announced it will begin restoring user access tomorrow, marking the end of a dispute with the Trump administration over export controls on advanced AI models.
What happened#
The Fable 5 model was taken offline in early June following a sudden directive from the Trump administration. The government imposed export restrictions citing concerns about potential security vulnerabilities and jailbreaks, effectively barring non-U.S. citizens—including international staff at Anthropic itself and foreign employees of enterprise clients—from accessing both Fable 5 and its underlying Mythos 5 model.
The path to reinstatement#
The Department of Commerce has now lifted the export controls. A post from Anthropic on X confirmed the decision and outlined plans to resume service.
Unlike a blanket restoration, the approval comes with guardrails: Mythos 5 remains available only to organizations on a pre-approved government list. This mirrors the rollout strategy the Trump administration imposed on OpenAI's GPT-5.6 model, which debuted under similarly staged access conditions.
Why the timing matters#
The export controls arrived during a particularly sensitive period for Anthropic—the company is preparing for an initial public offering while navigating months of tension with the Pentagon over a supply chain risk designation. The sudden constraints disrupted product launches the company had spent weeks promoting and created operational friction across its international workforce.
