Flowcharts boost code generation in multimodal AI systems
A new study finds that pairing visual flowchart diagrams with problem descriptions significantly improves how AI language models generate code.
Multimodal large language models—systems that can process images alongside text—have opened new possibilities for automated code generation. An arXiv paper exploring this space tests whether adding flowcharts to problem descriptions helps AI systems write better code.
The experiment#
Researchers created flowcharts based on reference solutions to competitive programming problems from AtCoder, then fed these diagrams together with problem statements to GPT-4o. The visual representations were meant to mirror how software engineers use flowcharts as a comprehension aid in real development work.
What improved#
Supplying flowcharts alongside text prompts yielded performance gains of up to 10%. The team also tested different levels of flowchart detail—from highly abstract to more granular—and found that greater specificity in the diagrams corresponded with better model performance.
Comparing to other techniques#
The researchers benchmarked flowchart-assisted generation against few-shot learning, where the model receives example inputs and outputs before solving the target problem. One-shot examples delivered steady improvements, while two-shot examples contributed only marginal gains. This suggests flowcharts may offer a more efficient way to guide model behavior than simply adding more examples.
Why it matters#
The findings underscore the value of incorporating domain-standard visual artifacts—not just generic images—into AI-assisted development tools. As multimodal models become more capable, software diagrams could become a practical bridge between human reasoning and machine code generation.
