OpenAI's AGI Chief Simo Steps Back to Part-Time Role as Health Struggles Continue
After taking medical leave in April for a chronic neuroimmune condition, Fidji Simo is leaving her full-time position leading AGI efforts at OpenAI.
The Verge
Fidji Simo, who heads OpenAI's artificial general intelligence initiatives, announced she is transitioning out of her full-time role and will serve as a part-time advisor instead. The move comes following months of health challenges that began earlier this year.
Background on Simo's Health Situation#
Simo took several weeks of medical leave starting in April after developing complications from a chronic neuroimmune condition she has managed for seven years. At the time, she had only recently assumed the title of AGI chief, having previously served as the company's applications CEO. In her announcement, she explained that what initially seemed like a shorter recovery period has evolved into a far more demanding health battle that demands her full attention.
What She's Shared About Her Condition#
In her statement on social media, Simo reflected on the tension between her professional ambitions and her health struggles: "It has been a jarring experience to spend my days helping build the future while simultaneously navigating a disabling disease that still has no cure." She emphasized that the recovery path turned out to be lengthier and more complicated than she originally anticipated, making a return to full-time leadership untenable at this moment.
Broader Executive Reshuffling at OpenAI#
Simo's departure is part of a series of leadership shifts that rippled through OpenAI's executive ranks this year. Around the same time she took her medical leave, Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap stepped away from his position to pursue "special projects," and Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rouch also departed to address her own health concerns. That period prompted a restructuring in which President Greg Brockman took on expanded responsibilities overseeing product development and scaling efforts across multiple business pillars, while other senior leaders managed the company's business operations.
Leadership Response#
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman responded with sympathy to the news, expressing sadness about Simo's situation while acknowledging her contributions to the organization.
