SpaceX Reportedly Developing Sleek AI-Powered Handheld Device
Elon Musk's aerospace company has shown a prototype handset-like AI gadget to investors, though Musk himself denies the claims.
TechCrunch — AI
SpaceX has been shopping a prototype of a handheld AI device to investors, according to reporting from The Wall Street Journal. The device is said to be thinner and more refined than current iPhones, occupying territory somewhere between a compact touchscreen phone and existing AI hardware like the Rabbit R1.
Company representatives disclosed to investors that the prototype remains early-stage and could undergo significant design revisions. However, Elon Musk has flatly rejected the report on social media, labeling it as unfounded.
Manufacturing and Market Position#
SpaceX already possesses considerable advantages if it pursues production at scale. The company, along with sister operation Tesla, has established manufacturing infrastructure and access to semiconductor supply chains—both essential for building consumer gadgets powered by on-device processing. The firm has also indicated strategic intent to move into the wireless sector through Starlink Mobile, potentially challenging established carriers like Verizon and AT&T. Industry watchers have speculated that SpaceX might even pursue acquisitions of existing telecom players, though such deals would command astronomical valuations.
Design and Operating System#
The reported device would run proprietary software rather than relying on Android or iOS, incorporating technology from xAI—the AI company Musk acquired earlier this year. This approach mirrors efforts by competitors to escape dependency on established platform ecosystems while enabling custom artificial intelligence interfaces built from the ground up.
The AI Device Landscape#
The move reflects broader competitive dynamics in the emerging AI hardware space. OpenAI is simultaneously developing its own device in collaboration with Jony Ive, Apple's former lead designer, with CEO Sam Altman promising something fundamentally different in tone from the iPhone. OpenAI recently recruited Paul Meade, the executive responsible for Apple's Vision Pro, to strengthen its hardware division.
