Shopify's AI-powered search is boosting sales—without cannibalizing Google traffic
The e-commerce platform credits AI-driven shopping to a record earnings beat, finding that intelligent product discovery actually complements traditional search rather than replacing it.

Shopify is riding a wave of AI-powered shopping, crediting the technology with a significant portion of its better-than-expected second-quarter earnings. Rather than cannibalizing search traffic, the e-commerce giant reports that AI is opening new revenue streams alongside—not at the expense of—traditional search engines.
President Harley Finkelstein told analysts that AI search has become a "complement to search, rather than a substitute for it," and has particularly helped smaller merchants, who form the backbone of Shopify's customer base. The company's revenue jumped 36% to $3.6 billion, beating Wall Street's $3.4 billion forecast, with gross operating profit climbing 31% to $1.71 billion.
How AI search differs from traditional shopping#
The advantage lies in how AI understands customer intent. While conventional search engines rank results by keyword popularity, AI agents operate across multiple dimensions of product data simultaneously. When a shopper asks for a car seat that fits three children across a sedan, traditional search latches onto the term "car seat." An AI assistant, by contrast, considers dimensions, vehicle type, quantity needed, and other constraints to locate the exact product that solves the problem—not just the highest-ranked match.
This dimensional approach is narrowing the gap between discovery and purchase. Half of all AI-referred sessions land directly on a product page, nearly 2.5 times the conversion rate of traditional search.
A boom in the long tail#
AI is also reshaping what sells. Shopify found that 75% of AI-attributed purchases in the second quarter came from outside its top 100 product categories—a sign that intelligent discovery is unlocking demand for niche items rather than concentrating sales among bestsellers. AI-driven traffic and orders more than tripled year-over-year.
Meanwhile, traditional search remains robust. Finkelstein noted that standard search sessions have grown 1.3x over two years and still represent roughly a third of all storefront traffic, indicating that AI adoption is expanding the overall market rather than stealing share.
Building connections to AI platforms#
Shopify is strengthening its position by integrating with major AI tools and agents—Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Manus, Replit and Vercel—as well as vibe-coding platforms like Lovable. These connectors let merchants customize their storefronts and tap into emerging shopping behaviors without building from scratch.
