Midjourney snaps up social astrology app Co-Star, expanding beyond AI image generation
The AI image generator has acquired the astrology platform in a move that signals broader ambitions to become a diversified consumer tech company.
TechCrunch — AI
Midjourney, the AI company celebrated for its text-to-image and video generation capabilities, has purchased Co-Star, a social astrology platform with roughly 4.3 million monthly active users. The acquisition terms remain undisclosed, according to reporting from Bloomberg.
What Co-Star does#
The app helps users generate their astrological birth charts and connect with friends to share readings. Co-Star combines artificial intelligence with human-written content to produce personalized horoscopes, relationship compatibility guides, and other astrological insights tailored to each person's chart data.
A expanding playbook#
Midjourney's acquisition of Co-Star marks the latest signal that the company wants to move beyond its core strength in generative imagery. The AI lab already runs operations focused on medical applications and wellness services. Co-Star's team of around 25 staff members will join Midjourney as part of the deal, bringing hands-on consumer product experience to an organization currently best known for its Discord-based interface rather than standalone applications. This addition could help the company finally develop the standalone consumer app it has long lacked.
