Anthropic launches Claude Tag: A persistent AI team member for Slack channels
Claude Tag moves beyond on-demand assistance to become a permanent, asynchronous agent that accumulates knowledge and works autonomously across Slack channels.
The New Stack
Anthropic has rolled out Claude Tag, a new Slack integration that transforms Claude from an on-demand assistant into a persistent team member that lives permanently in channels, accumulates institutional knowledge, and executes long-running tasks independently.
The beta offering, available to Enterprise and Team plan users, replaces the original Claude in Slack app (launched October 2025) and builds on Claude Code's autonomous capabilities (added in December) by extending agent-like behavior beyond engineering workflows to broader team collaboration.
Key Capabilities#
Claude Tag introduces several novel features:
- Persistent presence: One Claude instance per channel, shared by all members, that monitors conversations and proactively flags issues or follows up on stalled threads when "ambient" mode is enabled
- Asynchronous execution: Tasks can run over hours or days without constant oversight, with Claude learning vocabulary and context as it works
- Cross-channel awareness: Where admins permit, Claude can reference information from other channels to inform its work
- Multiplayer steering: Team members can redirect, correct, and build upon Claude's work in real time, rather than working in isolation
- Token limits: Administrators can set per-channel spending caps to prevent runaway costs
The "Agent Identity" Model#
The system depends on what Anthropic calls "agent identity," a new access framework that lets Claude operate under its own accounts—rather than inheriting whoever invoked it. This sidesteps security risks: shared channels can't become backdoors to personal documents, and permissions live at the workspace level, not the user level.
As Noah Zweben from the Claude Code team explains: "Agent identity replaces the question 'what can this user do?' with 'what can this agent do in this compartment?'"
Competing for the AI Control Layer#
Team messaging platforms are rapidly becoming the command center for enterprise AI agents. GitHub has brought Copilot into Microsoft Teams, OpenAI's Codex includes a Slack integration for delegating coding tasks, Cognition's Devin was built around Slack, and Block has developed an agent orchestration system managed entirely from Slack threads using its Goose framework.
