Vis-CoT: Interactive Framework for Human-in-the-Loop LLM Reasoning (Withdrawn)
A research proposal to make large language model reasoning more transparent and controllable through interactive visualization and human intervention has been withdrawn from arXiv.
Overview#
Researchers proposed Vis-CoT, a human-in-the-loop framework designed to address a fundamental challenge with large language models (LLMs): the opacity of their chain-of-thought (CoT) reasoning processes. The work, originally submitted to arXiv's Computer Science > Computation and Language category, has since been withdrawn.
Key Innovation#
The framework converts linear chain-of-thought text into an interactive reasoning graph, enabling users to:
- Visualize the logical flow and structure of model reasoning
- Identify flawed reasoning steps
- Intervene by pruning incorrect paths or grafting new user-defined premises into the reasoning process
This shifts interaction from passive observation to active collaboration, where humans can steer models toward more accurate conclusions.
Reported Results#
According to the abstract, Vis-CoT demonstrated improvements across benchmark datasets:
- Up to 24 percentage points improvement in final-answer accuracy over non-interactive baselines on GSM8K and StrategyQA
- User studies showed significant gains in perceived usability and trust
Significance#
The work highlights a practical direction for creating more reliable and understandable AI systems by combining LLM capabilities with targeted human oversight—particularly important for high-stakes applications where verification and debugging are critical.
Note: The paper was withdrawn on June 25, 2026, after undergoing three revisions. No PDF is currently available.
