Dutch law enforcement has arrested a 24-year-old Amsterdam resident suspected of leading ShinyHunters, the hacking collective responsible for a string of high-profile cyberattacks. The arrest came on September 15th, occurring just before the group claimed to have infiltrated the FBI's systems and stolen employee information.
A Pattern of High-Profile Breaches#
ShinyHunters has claimed responsibility for breaches affecting several major organizations, including Ticketmaster, Rockstar Games, and the FBI. The group's activities have drawn significant attention from law enforcement agencies on both sides of the Atlantic, making this arrest a significant development in the ongoing effort to dismantle the collective.
Who Is the Suspect?#
According to cybersecurity reports and news outlets, the arrested individual is believed to be Pepijn van der Stap, a Dutch hacker with a prior criminal record. Van der Stap was previously convicted in 2023 on charges related to data theft and extortion. Following his release from prison, he reportedly joined Neo Security, a Dutch cybersecurity firm. ShinyHunters has denied any connection to the suspect, claiming he has "no association" with their operations.
Law Enforcement's Next Steps#
Brett Leatherman, the FBI's Cyber Division Assistant Director, characterized the arrestee as one of the group's primary operators and issued a direct appeal to remaining members. "The longer you stay in this, the more we learn about you. You know how to find us, and we know how to find you," Leatherman stated in a video message published this week, urging others to come forward voluntarily.
Dutch authorities have also charged the suspect with "attempted incitement to commit two murders," adding another serious dimension to the investigation. FBI Director Kash Patel indicated that federal teams are actively pursuing additional leads stemming from this arrest, signaling an intensified effort to identify and apprehend other members of the hacking network.
