Google DeepMind has announced a $75 million investment into indie film studio A24, positioning the partnership as the first of its kind to develop AI tools designed specifically for filmmaking. The collaboration aims to create AI features that support artists while preserving creative vision—with Google DeepMind building features informed by feedback from A24's roster of filmmakers and industry leaders.
"By collaborating with filmmakers and industry leaders like A24 from the beginning, we can build new AI features to support artists in authentic, meaningful storytelling that helps enable their creative vision," said Demis Hassabis, Google DeepMind co-founder and CEO.
A24 has built a reputation producing critically acclaimed indie films, including "Everything Everywhere All At Once" and recent releases like "Marty Supreme." The studio has worked with prominent actors including Timothée Chalamet and Anne Hathaway.
While AI in Hollywood remains contentious, A24 isn't pioneering the space. Netflix acquired Ben Affleck's InterPositive earlier this year—a company focused on AI filmmaking tools—and Amazon's MGM Studios established an AI unit last year to develop production software.
