Snorkel AI's valuation surges to $3.5B on explosive demand for AI training data
The data-prep startup has tripled its valuation in 17 months while its revenue run-rate has grown 18-fold, riding a wave of AI labs' hunger for high-quality training material.
TechCrunch — AI
Snorkel AI, which supplies AI development teams with training datasets and simulated environments, closed a $350 million Series E round that values the company at $3.5 billion. The funding round, led by Insight Partners and S32, marks a dramatic revaluation for the seven-year-old startup—nearly three times the $1.3 billion price tag it commanded just 17 months earlier during its Series D.
The round included participation from returning backers Addition, Lightspeed, Greylock, GV, and Wells Fargo.
From tools to finished products#
Snorkel's business has evolved significantly over the past year. Originally known for software that automated the tedious work of labeling training data, the company pivoted to offering fully prepared datasets directly to customers—a shift toward what it terms "data-as-a-service." This new model blends algorithmic data generation with contributions from human subject-matter experts rather than relying exclusively on marketplace labor.
Explosive revenue growth fueled by AI appetite#
The company now reports an annualized revenue run-rate of $375 million, representing an 18-fold jump over the past year. This surge reflects the intense competition among AI labs and enterprises to secure high-caliber training datasets.
Snorkel is far from alone in this trajectory. The data-for-AI sector has seen comparable growth explosions across the industry:
- Mercor's gross annualized revenue has reached $2 billion
- Handshake surpassed the $1 billion milestone earlier in 2026
- Micro1 has scaled to a $500 million run-rate
A key caveat: most of these companies distribute roughly 60–70% of their gross revenue directly to workers completing the training tasks, meaning net profitability is considerably lower than headline figures suggest. Snorkel's accounting differs because it delivers finished datasets and reinforcement learning environments rather than marketplace labor—so expert compensation flows through cost of goods sold rather than inflating top-line revenue.
Origins and trajectory#
Snorkel emerged from Stanford research led by co-founder and CEO Alex Ratner and launched its commercial product in 2019 after four years of academic development.
