OpenAI Acquires Glass Imaging for $300 Million, Bolstering Hardware Ambitions
The ChatGPT maker has purchased the smartphone camera startup founded by former Apple engineers, signaling deeper investment in its emerging device lineup.
TechCrunch — AI
OpenAI has acquired Glass Imaging, a startup specializing in smartphone camera technology, for more than $300 million, The Wall Street Journal reports. The move represents a significant step in OpenAI's push into consumer hardware, adding imaging expertise to its growing portfolio of device initiatives.
The Company and Its Background#
Glass Imaging, launched in 2019 from Los Altos, California, was founded by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, two former Apple engineers who previously led development of Apple's Portrait Mode. The company had raised approximately $30 million in prior funding rounds before the acquisition.
How Glass Imaging's Technology Works#
Rather than applying AI as a post-capture editing tool, Glass Imaging employs neural networks to understand the hardware characteristics of individual camera systems across different smartphone models. This approach optimizes image quality at the moment the photo is taken, leveraging machine learning to work within the physical limitations of mobile device cameras. The technique represents a shift from traditional computational photography that enhances images after capture.
OpenAI's Hardware Strategy#
The acquisition fits within OpenAI's broader effort to develop consumer devices. The company has been linked to multiple hardware projects in development, including smartphones, earbuds, and AI companion devices. In 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman partnered with legendary Apple designer Jony Ive, leading to OpenAI's $6.5 billion acquisition of Ive's company, io, which is focused on building AI-centric hardware experiences.
