Google Assistant Shutting Down on Android Phones and Tablets This September
Google is phasing out Assistant across mobile devices and wearables, making Gemini the sole AI assistant on Android.
The Verge
Google is pulling the plug on Google Assistant for Android phones, tablets, and paired devices, with the shutdown beginning September 4th. The company confirmed the change through an email to users, spelling the end of a product that will be replaced entirely by Gemini on mobile platforms.
The End of an Era#
Google has announced it will begin removing access to Google Assistant from mobile devices starting September 4th, with the full rollout expected to take several weeks. Once the transition completes, users will have no way to revert to Assistant—the app will simply cease to function as an AI-powered assistant.
The decision marks the culmination of a gradual shift toward Gemini, which has become Google's flagship conversational AI tool. For devices where Gemini is available and the hardware meets minimum specifications, the new AI assistant will be the only option going forward.
Scope of the Shutdown#
The discontinuation extends beyond smartphones and tablets. Devices connected to a phone will also lose Assistant functionality, including:
- Wear OS smartwatches
- Wireless headphones and earbuds
- Vehicles using Android Auto
However, cars equipped with Google built-in software and standalone products like Google Home and Google TV devices will retain Assistant access for now. The removal appears to be a mobile-specific measure rather than a total elimination of Assistant across all platforms.
Why the Delay?#
Google had originally targeted 2025 for phasing out Assistant from "most mobile devices," but pushed the timeline back. The decision to finally execute the shutdown now suggests the company feels confident that Gemini is ready to fully replace Assistant's functionality for mainstream users.
As one of Google's longer-running products, Assistant is now headed toward the company's growing list of discontinued services.
