OpenAI and Elastic Partner to Solve Enterprise AI's Data Access Challenge
The integration lets AI agents securely retrieve and reason over scattered enterprise data while respecting user permissions and cutting token costs.
The New Stack
Enterprise AI faces a fundamental obstacle: advanced models may be powerful, yet they struggle when they need to safely tap into the information that actually matters to organizations. Addressing this bottleneck, OpenAI and Elastic announced an expanded partnership that unites OpenAI's reasoning capabilities with Elasticsearch's search and access-control prowess.
The core issue, sometimes labeled "context debt," stems from how enterprise data remains scattered—split across documentation, support tickets, logs, and years of accumulated knowledge—while typically locked behind role-based access controls. AI agents must find and act on only the information users are permitted to see.
Retrieval First, Reasoning Second#
Elasticsearch now serves as the gatekeeper between OpenAI models and company data. When an AI agent searches for information, Elasticsearch retrieves only what the requesting user is authorized to access, then feeds that filtered context to the reasoning model. This separation improves both cost and accuracy: tighter retrieval means fewer tokens consumed and fewer irrelevant facts for the model to process.
Elastic's internal testing underscores the payoff. In retrieval benchmarks, Elasticsearch achieved 0.89 recall while maintaining multi-tenant isolation. Using the BrowseComp-Plus benchmark, precomputed Knowledge Indicators slashed input token usage by 75% versus standard retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines, while lifting answer accuracy from 60% to 92%.
While earlier versions offered basic connectors since 2023, the new integration targets three operational priorities: context-aware agent behavior, observability of autonomous systems, and security monitoring.
Monitoring Agents in Production#
As enterprises deploy autonomous agents, understanding what those systems do becomes mission-critical. Elastic now consolidates OpenAI API metrics and audit logs into a single control plane, letting site reliability engineers track token consumption, model activity, and infrastructure health at a glance. When failures occur, Elastic's investigation workflows correlate these signals to pinpoint root causes and recommend remediation—eliminating the need for engineers to hop between separate dashboards.
Security Analysts Get Help from AI#
The partnership also extends to security operations. Instead of drowning in thousands of isolated alerts, security teams can now use OpenAI models to automatically link disparate signals into coherent attack chains mapped to the MITRE ATT&CK framework. Analysts review evidence-backed narratives rather than raw log dumps.
