AMD to acquire AI researcher Fei-Fei Li's World Labs for $8.2 billion
The chip maker is betting that bringing the world-generation startup in-house will accelerate its AI hardware and software development.

AMD has agreed to acquire World Labs, the artificial intelligence research company co-founded by computer scientist Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $8.2 billion. The deal underscores AMD's push to deepen its foothold in AI infrastructure through strategic talent and technology acquisition.
The Deal and Leadership Changes#
World Labs, which launched in 2024 and reached a $1 billion valuation within months, will join AMD as a subsidiary unit. Li, who serves as the startup's co-founder and chief executive, will assume the role of executive vice president and chief scientist at AMD, reporting directly to CEO Lisa Su. The company expects the transaction to finalize by year's end, with World Labs continuing its AI model research efforts under the AMD umbrella.
World Labs' Technology and Mission#
The startup has begun commercializing its research through Marble, a world generation model that enables users to construct interactive 3D environments from text prompts. This technology represents a different frontier in AI compared to large language models—one focused on spatial understanding and generative 3D capabilities.
AMD's Strategic Rationale#
AMD framed the acquisition as an opportunity to strengthen its capacity to design AI-specific hardware, software, and systems. The chip maker argues that understanding emerging model architectures is essential to building the right computational platforms. By integrating World Labs' research leadership, AMD aims to align its processor designs with the actual requirements of next-generation AI workloads.
Li emphasized the strategic fit in a post on her Substack, noting that continuing World Labs' mission within AMD allows the team to expand their work on foundation models beyond traditional language models while maintaining a commitment to open-source collaboration with the broader AI community.
Broader AI Consolidation Trend#
The acquisition is the latest in a wave of multibillion-dollar AI-focused deals. Nvidia announced earlier this month that it would acquire Hugging Face, a major open-source AI platform, for nearly $13 billion—signaling intense competition among tech giants to secure AI talent and infrastructure.
