Gemini Approaches Billion-User Milestone as Google's AI Assistant Rivals ChatGPT
Google's Gemini has surged to 950 million monthly active users, positioning itself on the brink of joining the company's exclusive club of billion-user products.

Gemini is on track to become Google's next billion-user product, sitting at over 950 million monthly active users according to the company's latest earnings announcement. The AI assistant now joins a rarified group at Alphabet that includes Search, Gmail, Drive, Android, YouTube, and Chrome—all services that have crossed the billion-user threshold.
Rapid User Growth Trajectory#
The growth has been striking. Gemini's user base has tripled in the past year, and the expansion shows no signs of slowing. In February, the app had reached 750 million monthly active users, meaning it added roughly 200 million users in just five months. This velocity puts Gemini on a competitive footing with OpenAI's ChatGPT, which hit 1 billion monthly active users in June.
The rollout of new AI-driven features has fueled adoption. CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted the appeal of agentic capabilities like Daily Brief and Gemini Spark, a personalized assistant now available across the U.S. and internationally.
Strength Across Platforms#
Beyond its Android presence, Gemini has built a substantial following on iOS. The introduction of tools like the Nano Banana image generation model helped the app accumulate over 137 million downloads on Apple's platform in the past 12 months, demonstrating that Google's AI reach extends well beyond its own ecosystem.
Recent market analysis from Sensor Tower revealed that ChatGPT's dominance is eroding—its share of the AI assistant market dipped below 50% for the first time in the first half of 2026, while Gemini captured 27.7% of the market.
Search Remains Strong Despite AI Assistant Competition#
Interestingly, the rise of AI assistants hasn't cannibalized Google's core search business. The company's Q&A-style AI mode integrated into Google Search crossed 1 billion users this quarter. Google has managed this growth partly through architectural improvements that reduced the computational cost of delivering AI capabilities, even as it expanded the feature set and underlying models.
Pichai remarked that the company is "shipping helpful new features at an incredible pace," suggesting Google sees sustained momentum across both its AI assistant and search products.
