OpenAI Extends Voice-Powered Work Features to ChatGPT Mobile
Paid subscribers can now use voice commands on their phones to trigger AI-powered workflows like document drafting and email summarization.
TechCrunch — AI
OpenAI is rolling out voice-activated task automation to the ChatGPT mobile app, letting users manage complex workflows through spoken commands rather than typing.
What's Available#
Premium tiers of ChatGPT subscribers—those on Plus and Pro plans—gain access to a mobile Work tab that responds to voice instructions. Users can initiate actions such as drafting documents, composing emails, condensing Slack threads, building websites, and generating presentations, along with accessing specialized tools like financial analysis and a cloud browser. Subscribers on free and Go tiers can still use plugins and integrate external apps, but lack access to the advanced agentic features.
Enhanced Voice Experience#
The update makes voice interactions more practical by delivering fuller text responses alongside audio, and letting users fluidly transition between voice and text input during a single session. Users can also begin work on their phone and seamlessly pick up where they left off on a desktop version of the app.
The Broader Context#
Voice-driven task execution has gained momentum across the AI assistant landscape as users increasingly rely on spoken prompts for managing sophisticated operations. OpenAI previously introduced its GPT-Live conversational model in July, then brought those capabilities to desktop to handle Work tab tasks and app development in Codex. The mobile rollout extends this same infrastructure to smartphones and tablets.
Meanwhile, competitor Anthropic has been streamlining its interface—recently combining its Chat and Cowork products into a unified experience. OpenAI, by contrast, continues to maintain distinct chat and workspace sections.
