AI-Powered Reading Tool Helps Students with ADHD and Dyslexia Process Text Faster
Researchers have developed an AI system that combines smart summarization with adaptive typography to help neurodivergent students improve reading speed and comprehension.
A new artificial intelligence application aims to remove barriers that slow reading comprehension for students with dyslexia, ADHD, and attention difficulties. The system merges real-time text summarization with visual formatting adjustments to help learners process written material more effectively.
How It Works#
The tool harnesses Google's Gemini API to generate concise, context-aware summaries directly from user-supplied text. Rather than requiring expensive computational resources on-site, the application streams requests to the cloud-hosted model, eliminating the overhead of running or customizing a local language model. Users can paste text or upload files in .txt, .pdf, and .docx formats, and the system processes each source separately before delivering a summary.
Beyond summarization, the platform layered in typographic enhancements designed to guide the eye. A custom half-word bolding technique draws attention to word beginnings, while a secondary pass identifies and accentuates genuine keywords using part-of-speech analysis and frequency ranking. Users gain control over spacing parameters—adjusting gaps between lines, words, letters, and text blocks—to match their personal reading preferences.
Technical Foundation#
The application runs on a lightweight Flask web framework that acts as an intermediary, relaying requests to Google's Gemini API. This architecture keeps the interface simple while delegating heavy language processing to a remote service. The combination of summarization and visual customization creates a personalized reading experience tailored to each student's needs.
Early Outcomes#
Pilot results suggest that merging AI-driven content condensation with adaptive formatting yields meaningful gains. Students in the target population reported faster reading speeds and improved retention of key ideas, indicating that the integrated approach successfully addresses both the cognitive and visual obstacles that can hinder their learning.
