EPIC Framework helps developers write clearer instructions for AI coding agents
A new framework offers 40 practices to help developers specify expectations clearly before AI agents write code, reducing bugs and improving collaboration.
Developers instructing coding agents face a subtle but critical challenge: small wording differences can dramatically change how AI interprets requests. One team discovered they had to write "must" instead of "should" because the agent treated optional language as a green light to make its own assumptions. This observation led researchers to develop a framework that helps teams write better specifications before handing tasks to coding agents.
The EPIC Framework and its 40 practices#
Spec-driven development (SDD) asks teams to document their requirements, plans, and tasks explicitly before an AI agent begins writing code. While existing SDD frameworks offer templates, they leave developers guessing whether they've been thorough or clear enough. Researchers evaluated 114 open-source SDD repositories using the ISO/IEC/IEEE 29148 standards for software requirements and extracted best practices from the highest-performing ones.
The resulting EPIC framework provides 40 specific practices grouped across 10 quality dimensions—giving developers concrete guidance on making expectations and decisions transparent. These practices help teams:
- Craft unambiguous language for agent instructions
- Anticipate where agents might fill gaps with incorrect assumptions
- Structure specifications, plans, and tasks for clarity
- Document decision-making rationale upfront
Real-world impact on code quality#
In testing with 15 SDD practitioners, the vast majority endorsed every practice in EPIC. The framework's effectiveness showed up in measurable ways across repositories: those in the top third for specification quality spent just 11.8% of their development effort on bug fixes, compared with 20.4% for repositories in the bottom third. Better specifications also correlated with stronger team collaboration—top-performing repositories had a median of 4 times as many contributors as lower-scoring ones.
Why clarity matters for AI-assisted development#
As teams increasingly rely on coding agents, the gap between what developers intend and what agents understand becomes a critical bottleneck. Clear, explicit specifications don't just reduce misunderstandings—they also prevent the cascade of bugs that stem from agents misinterpreting incomplete or ambiguous requirements. EPIC gives teams a practical toolkit to close that gap before agent code generation begins.
