Peak XV raises seed check sizes to $5M as Series A bar climbs
The Southeast Asia and India-focused VC firm unveiled 18 portfolio companies in its latest Surge cohort, marking a shift toward larger early-stage rounds and more capital-intensive startups.

Peak XV Partners, a major venture capital player managing over $10 billion across emerging markets in Asia, has expanded the scale of its seed investments through Surge, its early-stage platform. The firm's newly announced 18-company cohort represents a notable uptick in ambition for the program.
Investment scope widens#
Surge 12 becomes the first batch to operate under Peak XV's revised ceiling of up to $5 million per startup, a jump from the previous $3 million limit. The venture firm deployed more than $50 million across the entire cohort, which collectively assembled over $90 million in seed-stage capital. The firm declined to share the median check size, though it confirmed the figure has also risen.
Several companies in the current cohort had already secured outside funding—and in some cases, Peak XV capital—before formally joining the program, underscoring how the platform now operates alongside rather than separately from the firm's traditional seed investing.
Responding to market shifts#
"The bar to raise a Series A has gone up pretty significantly," according to Rajan Anandan, a managing director at Peak XV. The firm is increasingly backing capital-intensive founders, especially those working in deeptech, who need heftier seed rounds to reach the next milestone.
Surge has also become geographically broader with each wave. While over half of Surge 12's founders and operations are based in India, only five of the 18 companies are targeting the Indian market—the rest aim at global customers. The cohort spans talent from San Francisco to Sydney, reflecting a deliberate shift toward backing more internationally distributed teams.
Portfolio breadth and track record#
Since launching in 2019 under the Sequoia Capital India and Southeast Asia banner, Surge has backed more than 180 startups from founders across 18+ nationalities. The firm highlights that the 10 largest exits from prior cohorts now generate over $1 billion in combined annual revenue.
The latest batch spans AI, robotics, space, consumer, healthcare, music, and fintech. Companies range from an AI safety and personal computing platform to autonomous robots designed for underground pipe inspection and satellites built to detect radio-frequency signals from orbit. Three startups have not yet publicly disclosed their focus areas, but Peak XV indicates they are working in education, applied AI, and medical technology.
