Grok reportedly influenced Trump's Venezuela strategy, now shapes Pentagon AI policy
A secret 2025 meeting suggests Elon Musk's chatbot helped persuade the president to move against Nicolas Maduro, and the military is now leaning heavily on the system for operational decisions.

According to Time magazine, President Trump met privately with Elon Musk in December 2025, months after Musk stepped away from his role leading the Department of Government Efficiency. During the encounter, Trump reportedly spent extended hours consulting Grok, Musk's AI chatbot, on matters including how Venezuelan citizens might react to the removal of their leader, Nicolás Maduro.
How Grok shaped thinking on Venezuela#
The timing is striking: just weeks later, in January 2026, the U.S. launched a military operation that captured Maduro. Prior to that invasion, Trump had already initiated naval strikes against what he characterized as drug-trafficking vessels, drawing public scrutiny.
According to reporting, when users had begun asking Grok about the boat strikes and political instability in Venezuela, the system provided analysis framing Maduro as an unpopular autocrat whose removal would likely draw support from ordinary Venezuelans. When celebrations did follow the January invasion, Trump appeared convinced of Grok's analytical prowess.
Grok's expanding military footprint#
The influence extends well beyond strategic discussion. The Pentagon's head of artificial intelligence disclosed in June that the military deployed Grok to assist in targeting operations during the Iran conflict.
While other AI developers—including OpenAI and Anthropic—maintain contracts with defense agencies, Grok appears positioned to grow in prominence under the current administration. This week, the Pentagon named Musk and Anduril leader Palmer Luckey to co-direct a study on integrating advanced technology into modern military operations.
The intersection of Musk's commercial AI interests and Pentagon decision-making raises questions about the concentration of influence over defense technology development.
