Nvidia's $21 billion SpaceX stake reveals deep financial ties with key customer
An SEC filing shows the chip giant holds nearly 123 million shares in Elon Musk's rocket company, underscoring overlapping business relationships within the AI industry.

Nvidia has revealed a substantial equity stake in SpaceX, intensifying scrutiny of the chipmaker's complex web of financial investments across its customer base. The semiconductor firm controls nearly 123 million shares valued at approximately $21 billion as of the end of June, though market declines since SpaceX's initial public offering have reduced that position to roughly $17 billion.
The Investment Chain#
The stake traces back to Nvidia's $5.5 trillion valuation and its earlier capital deployment into xAI, an artificial intelligence venture led by Elon Musk. When Musk folded xAI into SpaceX operations in early 2025, Nvidia's investment took on new dimensions, transforming what began as backing for an AI laboratory into a major equity holding in a aerospace and space technology conglomerate.
Nvidia's Strategic Network#
The move exemplifies the approach taken by Jensen Huang, Nvidia's chief executive, to leverage the company's financial strength and market dominance in building interconnected partnerships throughout the AI sector. These relationships often create mutual dependencies: Nvidia gains influence and potential upside through equity stakes, while customer companies gain preferential access to its latest technology and partnership commitments.
SpaceX's Exclusive Commitment#
The arrangement has already yielded public-facing business commitments. During SpaceX's first earnings call as a public company, Musk characterized the relationship as exclusive, stating that the rocket firm had chosen to standardize its data centers entirely around Nvidia hardware. He specifically cited the company's Vera Rubin architecture as the preferred AI computing platform for SpaceX's infrastructure needs.
