Anthropic confirms Fable 5 as permanent Claude subscription feature after capacity crunch
Weeks of temporary access extensions have ended with Anthropic integrating its flagship Fable 5 model into Max and Team Premium plans at 50% of standard usage limits.
The New Stack
Anthropic has moved to resolve weeks of uncertainty by locking in permanent access to Claude Fable 5 for its higher-tier subscribers. Starting July 21, Fable 5 will become a standard component of Max and Team Premium subscriptions, available at half the usual usage capacity. Users on Pro and Team Standard plans will instead access the model through a pay-as-you-go credit system and receive a one-time $100 credit as compensation.
The capacity struggle behind the scenes#
The company's rollout difficulties reveal the infrastructure challenges that come with scaling cutting-edge AI systems. Although Anthropic had always intended to make Fable 5 a permanent subscription feature—originally announced in June—delivering on that promise required building out enough compute resources. The firm staged its access gradually as it expanded capacity, delaying the final integration until this week.
One Anthropic product executive acknowledged the strain on the organization. According to Thariq Shihipar, "This was due to a heroic effort by many people at Anthropic working sometimes literally around the clock." The rollout uncertainty had left subscribers in limbo, wondering whether they would retain access.
Why the 50% limit matters#
Anthropic has not disclosed the exact mechanics of the 50% usage cap or what that means for actual prompt counts. The constraint suggests the company is balancing subscriber demand against operational costs—a calculation that varies depending on usage patterns. Developers running intensive workflows will hit the ceiling faster than casual users.
The company has acknowledged that demand for Fable 5 proved harder to forecast than expected. To address the underlying capacity problem, Anthropic is reportedly in talks with Meta over a compute lease valued at up to $10 billion that could secure AI infrastructure access for roughly two years.
Expanding into a major growth market#
In tandem with the subscription changes, Anthropic is formalizing its footprint in India by introducing local pricing in Indian rupees. Claude Pro now costs ₹2,000 per month on annual subscription or ₹2,399 monthly, with taxes included—eliminating currency conversion fees that previously added to the price. Industry data identifies India as Claude's second-largest user base after the United States.
Together, these moves show Anthropic adapting its business model to balance compute scarcity with global demand. By locking in an access policy tied to infrastructure capacity while lowering friction in a growth market, the company is addressing both internal constraints and competitive positioning in an industry where model capability and serving costs have become the primary battleground.
