OpenAI Launches Dedicated Teen Mode for ChatGPT With Stronger Safeguards
OpenAI is rolling out ChatGPT for Teens, bundling age-appropriate safety controls, parental oversight tools, and study features designed to help younger users benefit from AI responsibly.
The Verge
OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT for Teens, a specialized interface designed specifically for users aged 13 to 17. The launch reflects growing concern about how generative AI systems shape younger audiences, even as other tech platforms tighten their own age-protection policies.
What's Included in Teen Mode#
The new experience automatically activates for anyone who identifies as a teenager or whom the system identifies as under 18. It consolidates several existing safety layers alongside fresh additions:
- Content restrictions: Tighter filters on graphic violence, self-harm depictions, and sexual or romantic roleplay
- Health alerts: Warnings and educational resources around sensitive topics such as eating disorders
- Parental tools: Controls to set quiet hours, receive safety notifications, and monitor potential risks
- Study features: A "responsible homework reminder" that detects when a teen may be attempting to bypass an assignment, redirecting them to ChatGPT's study mode. Users can also define "study hours" to automatically enable this mode during set times
- Engagement controls: Reminders about healthy use, prompts around image uploads, and customizable interface elements like accent colors and voice options
Mostly Consolidation of Existing Tools#
Many of these protections aren't brand new. OpenAI introduced age-prediction capabilities earlier in 2025, launched parental controls and study mode roughly a year ago, and just last month began rolling out more frequent break reminders for younger users. This rollout largely bundles those existing features under a unified teen interface.
OpenAI's Broader Safety Vision#
The company frames the move as part of a longer-term commitment to ensure young people can access AI "with protections that reflect their developmental stage, reinforce real-world relationships, and support healthy use over time." OpenAI says it will continue publishing research insights and developing additional safeguards as it refines the experience. Users under 13 remain barred from the platform entirely, per OpenAI's .
