Silicon Data raises $30M to create tradeable GPU pricing index for Wall Street
A startup backed by fresh Series A funding aims to establish standardized pricing for AI compute and launch futures contracts on CME.
TechCrunch — AI
The relentless expansion of AI infrastructure is driving hundreds of billions in annual spending on data centers and GPUs, making compute the dominant expense for companies building AI systems. Yet despite this massive capital deployment, the industry lacks a transparent, standardized mechanism to value GPU rental or allow firms to manage financial risk tied to compute price fluctuations.
Silicon Data's Market Solution
Silicon Data has just secured $30 million in Series A funding to address this gap. The startup intends to establish itself as the authoritative pricing reference for GPU rentals and create a benchmark index that Wall Street derivatives can reference. The company plans to launch compute futures trading on the CME on October 5th, subject to regulatory clearance.
What the Data Reveals
On a recent episode of TechCrunch's Equity podcast, research head Steve Hou discussed the signals emerging from AI infrastructure data. His insights paint a more nuanced picture than prevailing narratives of chip depreciation and stalled facility development. The company's analysis suggests the AI buildout remains robust, contradicting pessimistic headlines about cooling demand.
