Agentic AI
Gusto Releases AI Agent That Proactively Manages Payroll, HR, and Benefits
Gusto Cofounder, built in eight weeks with Claude Code, acts as an autonomous business partner for small businesses—not just a reactive assistant.
The New Stack
Gusto has unveiled Gusto Cofounder, an AI agent designed to work autonomously on core business operations without waiting for explicit user requests. Unlike passive chatbots, the tool proactively handles payroll, HR, benefits, scheduling, and accounting tasks while maintaining strict data governance.
Beyond Reactive AI#
Eddie Kim, Gusto's co-founder and CTO, emphasizes the distinction: "This is 'someone' that business owners can reach out to at any time and actually proactively help with things that will grow the business"—not a search engine that merely responds to queries.
The inspiration came from Kim's childhood experience watching his mother manage back-office operations in the family business. She handled payroll, insurance billing, bookkeeping, and scheduling with the intuition and foresight of a true co-founder.
Interaction and Integration#
Users interface with Gusto Cofounder via text or Slack. The agent accesses data already stored in Gusto's platform and can connect to third-party systems like Google Workspace to extract information and perform calculations across integrated tools.
For example, it can pull payroll data from Google Sheets, compute numbers, run payroll within Gusto, and notify the owner via text—all autonomously.
Security Through Consent Framework#
Gusto operates with sensitive financial data (salaries, benefits, tax information) daily. Gusto Cofounder enforces explicit permission for all actions, with granular scoping:
- Permissions are deterministically gated in code and cannot be bypassed
- Organizations set granular data scopes to limit what the agent can access
- As trust builds, users can raise thresholds to permit autonomous action without review
Built in Eight Weeks#
Kim notes the tool was developed by just five people in eight weeks using Claude Code. "It's the best code I've written in my whole entire life," he said, adding that the speed of development signals a shift in how software gets built: "I think the future of development is not just engineers writing code; it's everybody."
