Google Rebrands NotebookLM as Gemini Notebook, Deepens AI Integration
The note-taking app gets a new name and closer ties to Google's broader AI ecosystem, while gaining code execution capabilities.
The Verge
Google's AI-powered note-taking tool is undergoing a rebrand. The company announced that NotebookLM will now be called Gemini Notebook, signaling its tighter integration with Google's AI platform while maintaining its status as a distinct application.
What's changing#
The rename reflects NotebookLM's evolution as Google weaves its Gemini AI more fully into the product. The app will remain independent, but users will increasingly be able to access their notebooks through Gemini itself and, in the coming months, through AI Mode — the conversational search experience within Google Search.
New technical capabilities#
Rolling out alongside the rebrand is a feature announced last month: the ability to connect Gemini Notebook to a secure cloud computer for writing and executing code. This functionality is currently available to subscribers of Google's AI Ultra tier and Workspace business customers, with rollout to web-based Pro users expected in the coming weeks.
How the app has matured#
Since Google first unveiled the tool (initially as Project Tailwind) in May 2023, it has steadily accumulated research-focused features. The app can now condense notes into AI-narrated podcasts, generate slideshows with voiceover, and produce short-form clips reminiscent of TikTok. These additions underscore Google's vision of NotebookLM—now Gemini Notebook—as a hub for transforming unstructured information into multiple media formats.
