Grok chatbot hits users with gibberish bug, floods Reddit with complaints
XAI's Grok encountered a generation glitch that sent nonsensical text to some users, though the company says a simple session refresh typically resolves the issue.
TechCrunch — AI
XAI's Grok chatbot has been generating incoherent, rambling text for a subset of users, prompting frustration and spawning multiple complaint threads across social media. Affected individuals began reporting the problem as early as Wednesday morning.
The glitch in action#
Users encountered wildly unusual responses when interacting with the model. One person asked Grok to produce a PDF and received back a string of random words: "match it without and your they and two for planets can practical and often cheese…" The nonsense continued through several additional paragraphs. Another user attempting to check source links discovered links directed to reinforcement learning research papers rather than relevant material.
According to user reports, the issue primarily struck Grok Lite users on Grok.com, though TechCrunch's own testing could not reproduce the problem, suggesting the malfunction affected only a narrow slice of the user base.
Community response#
The Grok subreddit became flooded with frustrated users seeking help and venting about the disruption. Some found relief by starting fresh conversations or regenerating responses, though a handful reported the gibberish persisted even after multiple attempts to clear it.
The direct web interface on Grok.com bore the brunt of the problem; the Grok account on X itself remained unaffected.
Company's explanation#
On Thursday morning, Grok's official X account acknowledged the disruption and characterized it as "a rare temporary generation glitch." The statement recommended starting a new chat session or regenerating responses, noting the fix "usually clears right away." XAI's status page at https://status.x.ai showed no active incidents at the time of the announcement.
The company did not provide additional details when reached for further comment by TechCrunch.
Context: staffing challenges#
The incident arrives amid ongoing organizational turbulence at XAI. The company has experienced significant departures recently, including the departure of most of its founding leadership and roughly 50 researchers and engineers, according to reporting from May. Most recently, XAI rolled out in July, positioning it as a faster, more cost-efficient alternative positioned at the "Opus class" performance tier.
