DoorDash Expands Ordering Via Text, Drone Deliveries, and Return Pickups
The delivery platform is rolling out several new conveniences, from conversational text-based orders to autonomous aircraft delivery and simplified retail returns.

DoorDash is rolling out a trio of features designed to make ordering and returns more seamless: text message ordering, drone-powered food delivery, and a nationwide expansion of its retail return pickup service.
Ordering through text conversations#
Users will soon be able to place DoorDash orders entirely through text messaging, extending technology the platform introduced with its AI chatbot earlier this year. Rather than browsing the app, customers can text specific requests—whether naming a dish, asking for mood-based restaurant suggestions, or simply requesting their usual order—and DoorDash's system will search local options, propose a cart, and complete checkout all within the message thread. The service builds memory of user preferences to streamline future orders.
The feature is currently in preview, with iOS users in the US able to join a beta waitlist starting now. The company has not yet disclosed when Android users will gain access or a full launch timeline.
Drone deliveries from the sky#
DoorDash Air, the company's autonomous delivery service, will be tested in a yet-to-be-specified region of northern California with partner restaurants including Chipotle and Popeyes. According to DoorDash, roughly 80 percent of typical restaurant meals are light enough for the aircraft to transport, with delivery arriving at customers' doors in about five minutes based on early testing. No consumer rollout date has been announced.
Return pickups expanding nationwide#
Starting in November, DoorDash's returns service will become available across the country. The feature lets customers pay $7.99 to have DoorDash couriers collect unwanted items from their home and return them to local retailers—no box or shipping label needed. A Dasher picks up the item, delivers it back to the store, and handles the return process. The service is meant to help customers meet return deadlines when they lack time to visit a store or arrange shipping themselves.
