Anthropic rolls out Docs and Slides to counter Google's productivity AI advantage
Claude now lets users create, edit, and collaborate on documents and presentations directly within chats as Anthropic consolidates its AI tools into a unified interface.
The Verge
Anthropic is expanding Claude's capabilities with two new document and presentation tools, making a direct play against Google's tighter integration of AI with Workspace. Users can now draft, refine, and distribute Docs and Slides straight from any Claude conversation, then share them for collaborative editing.
What's launching#
The new Docs and Slides features arrive in beta, joining Claude's existing Design capabilities. These tools let Claude generate documents and presentations on request, with users able to either let Claude handle revisions or make manual edits themselves. Once created, each document or presentation gets its own shareable link accessible across mobile, desktop, and web.
Like Google Docs, Claude Docs start private but open to real-time collaboration—multiple editors can work simultaneously, and anyone (including Claude itself) can add comments inline.
Merging Claude's interface#
Anthropic is also collapsing its chat experience under a single "one Claude" umbrella, eliminating the separate Cowork productivity mode. Artifacts, Design, Docs, Slides, and other capabilities now surface automatically based on what each conversation requires, giving users consistent access to all tools without switching contexts.
Why it matters#
Google's dominance in productivity software stems partly from native AI features woven into Docs, Sheets, and Slides—including on-the-fly document generation and editing. By embedding comparable tools directly in Claude, Anthropic removes friction that previously pushed users to open a browser tab for Google's suite. Though Anthropic's underlying models are often regarded as more sophisticated, convenience has always been Google's edge.
The rollout begins with Pro and Max subscribers on web, desktop, and mobile over the coming weeks, with Team and Free tier support following later. Read more about the announcement.
