Modal Labs Valued at $15.75B as Inference Startup Eyes $750M Funding
The AI infrastructure provider is nearing a major funding round that would triple its valuation in just four months.
TechCrunch — AI
Modal Labs, a provider of AI inference infrastructure, is in the final stages of securing a $750 million funding round led by Accel, bringing the startup's valuation to $15.75 billion—more than triple what it was valued at merely four months prior.
Rapid Valuation Climb#
The latest funding round marks an extraordinary acceleration in Modal's market value. When the company closed its previous fundraise in May, it was valued at $4.65 billion after raising $355 million. The new round would represent a more than threefold jump in just a quarter, reflecting explosive investor appetite for AI infrastructure plays.
The Broader Inference Boom#
Modal is riding a wave of intense interest in inference services—the computational process of running trained AI models to generate outputs. This demand has been particularly strong from customers deploying open-source models, which lack the support infrastructure of proprietary alternatives.
The company is far from alone in commanding premium valuations. Baseten is in talks to raise capital at a $26 billion valuation, doubling its June value. Competitors Fireworks and Fal, which specializes in video and image generation inference, are also fielding investor interest for significantly higher valuations.
The Revenue Story Behind the Hype#
Despite soaring valuations, profitability remains elusive for these companies. Their margins are squeezed by the astronomical costs of acquiring and leasing compute capacity. Nonetheless, their revenue growth has been dramatic: Fireworks announced it had reached $1 billion in annualized revenue as of July—a fivefold increase year-over-year. Modal itself had surpassed $300 million in annualized revenue as of May, and multiple peers in the space are expected to hit the billion-dollar revenue mark before year's end.
Who Is Modal?#
Founded in 2021 by CEO Erik Bernhardsson and CTO Akshat Bubna, Modal is headquartered in New York with approximately 150 employees. Bernhardsson spent over 15 years at data-focused roles, including more than a decade at Spotify where he developed recommendation systems, and as chief technology officer at Better.com, an online mortgage platform. Bubna, a math and computer science graduate from MIT, was an early engineer at data-labeling firm Scale AI before joining the startup.
